Christmas Season

Hello Parents!

We know it's only November, and we haven't even gotten through The Will Rogers Follies yet, but here in the choir department preparation for our Christmas Season is already happening. We encourage parents to actively check the calender on this website. We will try to keep it as up to date as possible, but know that some dates may change. Vocal Ensemble should especially be making sure their calenders are current, as we have lots of performances scheduled. If you have any questions about your student's schedule, and your student cannot answer the questions, feel free to comment on this blog post and we will get you the information as soon as possible. Thank you for all of the support that you give our department.

Sincerely,
The Choir Officers

All-State Choir Event

Every year, members of Vocal Ensemble are invited to participate in the All-State Choir Event, a huge event where invited students of every Utah High School come together to learn from a guest conductor and perform in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. This year, twelve students from Hillcrest had the opportunity to go.

Elliot Rose, Jarom Norris, Rachel Owen, Abbie Barrett, Dane Anderson, Justina Walker, Bryce Hammond, Gage Richmond, Kimmy Workman, Cameron Winterbottom, Emily Torgerson, and Annika Talbot

It was a great experience to learn from Dr. Boers and to sing in the Tabernacle on Temple Square with such a large choir. All of the VE members involved would highly recommend this amazing experience to future choir students.

Tour Information

Hello Choir Parents! All members of the Concert Choir should have received a letter to take home concerning this year's Spring Tour. Members of Concert Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Band, Orchestra, Percussion, Dance Company, and Productions Company are invited on this year's tour. The proposed dates of the tour are 23-30 March 2013. It will be a maximum of $850 per student to attend. We will be going to Disneyland for the week and attending festivals sponsored by Disney. Other activities include going to the beach, on a dinner cruise, and attending a Broadway Musical. (A loose schedule was included with the letter sent home.)

The tour has been approved by the Board of Education, but still needs to be approved by the parents. The letter that was sent home with the students had an approval form attached that NEEDS to be turned in by every parent no later than October 12th. We need 80% of the parents to approve the tour in order to go forward. Approving the tour DOES NOT mean that your student has to go on tour. Tour is optional, and you can approve the tour and still choose not to send your student on Tour.

For those of you who will be attending, please note the following financial information. Payments will be due in five sets:

  • $150 on 12 October
  • $150 on 9 November
  • $150 on 14 December
  • $150 on 11 January
  • Remaining balance (up to $250) on 15 February
You may choose to pay more than the required amount before these deadlines, but PLEASE meet these deadlines, as we need to reserve tickets to our activities. Fundraising opportunities will be available, including an Program Ad Sale fundraiser that is going on right now and a Cookie Dough Fundraiser that should start soon.

Most of this information is in the letter that was sent home. Please read it carefully and discuss tour with your student. Again, please return the approval form as soon as possible, and no later than October 12th.

I came to Hillcrest and joined the STAB Choir and performed in Cinderella, where Mr. Winkleman taught me how to rise to my full potential and use the Performing Arts to make a difference in people’s lives. I then made it into Vocal Ensemble my Junior year, and have returned for a second year! Outside of choir, I like to play the guitar, read fantasy novels, and am involved in IB and NHS. I look forward to getting to know all of you, and I hope that you’ll ask me whenever you need help with anything! Music can change the world!

Meet the Director

RaNae Dalgleish
Director of Hillcrest Choirs and Orchestra

Hello! My name is RaNae Dalgleish and I am the director of the choirs and orchestra
at Hillcrest High School. I also have had the privilege of teaching orchestra at Union
Middle School for the last two years. I am in my sixth year of teaching at Hillcrest and
LOVE my job! I can’t think of anywhere I would rather be then hanging around with my
amazing, talented and funny students!

Just a little bit about me… I started playing the violin at age 4 (my mom used to brag
that I could read notes before I could read words!) and feel that my violin is definitely
my first love! I picked up the viola, cello and guitar along the way. I attended Utah State
University on full violin scholarship for 2 years where I majored in violin performance.
I transferred to the University of Utah (again on full violin scholarship) but changed my
major to Music Education. After graduation I was hired by Granite School District where
I taught for 9 years. My assignments varied from elementary music to Director of Choirs
at Olympus High. I “retired” from public education for 14 years to raise my growing
family of 5 children—all the while maintaining a private violin/viola studio between 25-
45 students.

A fun bit of trivia about my family for you…all of my own children have belonged to
the Hillcrest Husky Performing Arts! I have loved and admired their teachers and the
passion with which they were taught. In my wildest dreams I never would have guessed
that I would one day be a teacher at HHS—my own children’s school!

Some of the things I love most…my family, my students, diet coke, singing Alto II in
the Salt Lake Choral Artists Concert Choir and… as of last week…the Salt Lake Vocal
Artists, traveling to exotic countries, hearts of all kinds, listening to music, playing music
on my violin and singing music with my voice, laughing, chocolate, snorkeling, painting
ceramics, shopping and last but not least…wearing colorful lipstick!

Welcome everyone, to our new choir blogspot! I hope you enjoy your time in the choir
and make many friends and have many happy memories as a Husky singer!
